My practice is based on illustration, but it extends into a variety of mediums, such as painting and sculpture. Through them, I explore my childhood nostalgia for Japanese anime and western animation, and I use their influences to play with their narrative constructs and tropes to contextualize the female experience.

I am particularly obsessed with magical girls, and how the shōjo culture dictates a normative pink femineity, that is both exclusive and oppressive, and how girls navigate desire and expectations in their journey to adulthood. 

I relate to the magical girl concept through the fragile balance existing between empowerment and ‘female responsibilities’ inherent to the genre. Magical girls have supernatural powers full of possibilities but are bounded to concepts of hegemonic femininity such as motherhood, self-sacrifice and beauty. Rather than rebelling against this dichotomy, in my illustrations, my girl characters dance in the line, with silent discomfort, confused by the boundaries that adulthood impose on their infantile power. 

I also recreate toys through a variety of mediums, because I am interested in the tight relationship between capitalism and performative play, and as a tool to submerge ourselves in our personal fantasies. 

My ultimate goal is to create a soft candid world, accessible through childhood nostalgia, where one can be vulnerable enough to explore identity, power and desire.
